Detroit Red Wings

Featuring superstars such as Gordie Howe and Steve Yzerman, and winners of 10 Stanley Cup championships, the Detroit Red Wings are one of the top franchises in NHL history.  The 1950s will always represent the golden era for this magnificent club, but a resurgence in the late 1990s has carried over to the next century and made Red Wings fans appreciate that greatness is still in the making.  Known early on as the Cougars and Falcons, Detroit entered the NHL in 1926.  The team qualified for the postseason for the first time in 1929 and won back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 1936 and 1937 with Syd Howe and goalie Normie Smith leading the way.  Captain Sid Abel helped the Wings claim their third Cup in 1943, while Gordie Howe, Red Kelly, Terry Sawchuk, Marcel Pronovost, Alex Delvecchio and others contributed to four championships in a six-year span (1950, '52, '54 and '55).  Gordie Howe broke Rocket Richard's career goals record with his 545th in 1963, Mickey Redmond became the first Red Wings player to score 50 goals in a season (1972-73) and Yzerman tallied 65 goals in 1988-89.  The 1995-96 team broke the NHL record for regular-season wins with 62 and the Wings garnered Cup titles in both 1997 and 1998 with stars including Mike Vernon and Larry Murphy.  When Detroit defeated Carolina in the Cup finals in 2001-02, it marked the franchise's 10th championship.
