During the 20th century, the Giants won more games than any other National League team.  Despite many bitter postseason disappointments through the years, the Giants have garnered 20 pennants and eight World Series titles. Established in 1883 as the New York Gothams, the club was led early on by pitchers Tim Keefe and Mickey Welch.  The franchise earned its first pennant in 1888 and its first World Series victory in 1905. John McGraw came on board as player-manager in 1902 to begin a 29-year reign resulting in 10 pennants.  The Giants won a franchise record-106 games in 1904, Christy Matthewson pitched three 1905 World Series shutouts and the Giants won three consecutive pennants (1911-13) and then four more in a row (1921-24).  Among the Giants stars in the first quarter of the century were Joe McGinnity, Roger Bresnahan, Frankie Frisch and Joe Kelly. During the 1930s, the Giants captured three pennants and one World Series with Mel Ott's power and Carl Hubbell's pitching.Bobby Thomson's "shot heard 'round the world" gave the Giants an incredible 1951 pennant as Sal Maglie and Larry Jansen won 23 games each and Monte Irvin drove in 121 runs.  Three years later, Willie Mays enjoyed an MVP season to lead New York to an upset World Series sweep of Cleveland for the Giants' eighth championship. Orlando Cepeda, Mays, Willie McCovey and Juan Marichal helped carry the club in the 1960s, with the Giants just missing the 1962 World Series crown. Barry Bonds and Jeff Kent guided the Giants into the new century. The club won 97, 90, 95, 100 and 91 games from 2000 to 2004 - Bonds bashed a record-73 homers in 2001 - qualifying for the postseason three times.
